masterfully directed and masterfully acted, this Chinese film tackles the tragedy surrounding an earthquake that devastated China in the 70's. this movie is powerful. it comments on the definition, meaning and value of life. it has some splendid scenes capturing the ever-so-complicated dynamic between children and there parents. its lenght is offset by its captivating story.

I can watch this movie over and over again, Empire of the Sun. There are so many things this movie teaches us... mainly that imperfect human existence is deeply mired in futility. War is futile. What is friendship? What is love? What is innonence? Amazing acting by a young Christian Bale... amazing supporting cast including a very young Ben Stiller. Costuming and location shots are truly amazing. I highly recommend this movie.

a well-written, disturbing, realistic and engaging commentary on the present state immigration, ILO ILO. the movie makes some strong statements in regards to child-rearing, materialism, friendship and marriage. set in modern day Singapore, it follows the day to day struggle of a Chinese family trying to keep appearances in an image-driven society and the tragic repercussions that has on an innocent child.
